I arrived in Chicago safe and sound Wednesday afternoon after a couple of weather delays in Charlotte. Fortunately, the weather cleared up by the time I arrived in Chicago, as I had tickets to attend the Cubs game at Wrigley Field that evening. If you are a baseball fan like I am, even if you don’t particularly like the Cubs, going to a game at the Friendly Confines is a quasi-religious experience. The wife and I try to go there every year, assuming the Cubs are in town (if not, we’ll catch the Sox at Comiskey).
The Con itself is so far so good. It was only open for three hours last night, but the Ape booth did pretty well. the real test will be tomorrow.
And to cap the evening off, I had drinks with Bob Layton, arguably THE boyhood comics hero for me, for like three hours last night. David Hedgecock was on the shuttle bus with him from the airport, and they hit it off pretty well–well enough that they spent some time in the bar. Knowing that I was a Layton fan, David gave me a call and asked me to join him. Very nice fella, and exactly what I expected.
His run on Iron Man in the late 70s and early 80s is what turned me into a life-long comics fan. Now if I can only talk him into doing something for us….
