Now this may be an exaggeration about what can happen when you roll a crit failure, but there are some “fun” things that can happen when you do. What are some of the most interesting crit failures you’ve had in your rpging?
And, for those of you who are wondering, yes that IS an Ogre that BloodDeathDemon (Travis’s Warworld Online character) is fighting. And NO (for puposes of copyright infringement), that is NOT Shrek.

My paladin ended up throwing her war hammer across the room from a natural 1. Although this scene reminds me of a particular battle where the leader of a enemy group went to hit one of him minions for more of a “get your ass in gear” but the DM rolled a 20 followed by another 20 and basically the leader just insta-killed his minion.
My husband was DMing and was needless to say pissed that he wasted his good rolls on trying to make a humorous event in game. But since I am pretty sure I had rolled a natural 1 more than once during that encounter, that fumble really saved by butt.
Someone in our group crit failed their singing so the DM had all of our potions, poisons etc anything in glass jars shatter. We then pointed out that this would affect our weapons stored with them so he grudgingly granted various bonuses.
30 minutes later we ran into his big bad demon boss that no other group had ever gotten past. I walked up to it to say hello it knocked me unconcious and our group freaked out everyone throwing a weapon at it. The demon was dead before it hit the ground.
The DM was pissed he had never written anything past this point cuz the Demon was supposed to be near undefeatable.
Great stories! Keep ‘em coming, guys!
It seems that in our gaming campaigns crit failures match up perfectly with particular characters. In one of our campaigns, we have an egotistical showman swashbuckler who can’t seem to ever make rolls, and in the most dramatic crit failure, he dramatically leapt over a cavern of flame that engulfed him. It was such a grand failure, I had to draw it.
I was DM’ing a high level campaign where one player was using player knowlege that he would get a full level off the next monster if he defeated it single handedly. (a deck of many things was involved) However the next enounter was a T-Rex and he decided to try to take it down anyways yelling at the rest of the party not to help him no matter what. The fight ensues, he rolls a critical fumble on his attack, I let my players have a dex check to see how bad their fumble is. He critically fumbles his dex check, and his holy avenger ends up over the bank and in the river and him face planted in the ground infront of the T-Rex. The Rex rolls a hit to step on my player, who out of the kindness of my heart I give another dex (dodge) check to so he can attempt to not be seriously crushed. He critically fumbles that as well. So the Rex steps on his head and upper torso and I roll a natural 20 for the beasts bite attack. I just have to give into the inevitable at this point really. I have the Rex grab the players legs in it’s mouth and rip him in half.
I think I saw that scene in Jurassic Park — the guy in the toilet!
